Peony Garden Tour

William Saunders, first Director of the CEF, brought peonies to the Farm in the 1890s. The most prolific and influential breeder of both herbaceous and tree peonies of all times was Saunders’ son, A.P. Saunders, a founding member of the American Peony Society. Today, there are over 600 peonies, 400 varieties and over 100 Saunders’ peonies, making it the largest collection of his peonies in North America. Our peonies have won prizes at Canadian Peony Society and have been represented on Canadian stamps.

Rock Garden Tour

The rock garden was first started in the 1930’s. Between 1947 and 1952, it was redesigned by Warren Oliver. Note the conifers planted then were called “dwarf”, and they have grown immensely since then. Since 2014, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada staff and Friends of the Central Experimental Farm volunteers have been rejuvenating this garden by moving and replacing large trees and shrubs and planting alpines.
