Nestled in the picturesque town of Blanes, along the stunning Costa Brava coastline, the Marimurtra Botanical Gardenis one of the most breathtaking gardens on the Mediterranean. Perched atop dramatic cliffs that plunge into the azure waters below, Marimurtra offers visitors an unparalleled panoramic view of the coastline, making it a true paradise for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking tranquility.
Home to over 4,000 plant species, Marimurtra boasts an impressive collection of flora, the majority of which are exotic and originate from different corners of the world. Some of these specimens stand out not only for their rarity but also for their extraordinary size and age, making them a fascinating sight for botanists and casual visitors alike. The garden is divided into different areas, each showcasing unique ecosystems and landscapes, from lush tropical plants to arid cacti and succulents.
Marimurtra is more than just a botanical garden—it is the realization of a dream. Its creator, Carl Faust (1874–1952), was a German businessman who settled in Catalonia and dedicated his life, energy, and personal fortune to the establishment of this magnificent garden. His passion for nature and scientific research led him to transform Marimurtra into a center of botanical study and conservation, which continues to be a valuable resource for researchers and plant enthusiasts today.
The Araucaria bidwillii or Australian araucaria (from the Araucariaceae family), a monumental specimen located in the second garden. It is about 18 meters high and 8 meters wide and was planted in the Garden more than 80 years ago. It is a conifer tree – native to eastern Australia – with a dome-shaped crown, rough bark in dark brown or black sheets and persistent leaves. It blooms from mid-autumn to mid-spring, with inconspicuous flowers, with male and female cones on the same tree. The fruits are enormous ovoid cones weighing up to 10 kg, containing 50 to 100 edible seeds that ripen in summer, 17 months after pollination, although each tree bears fruit once every three years.
Brahea armata or blue palm (from the Arecaceae (Palmae) family), a palm with a single trunk, 8 to 12 m tall. In the third garden, in the California area, in front of the pond, there are three magnificent specimens, the tallest of which is about 6 m tall, and was planted 90 years ago. Originally from Baja California (Mexico). The crown is rounded and quite dense. It blooms from spring to summer, with cream-colored flowers, grouped in spectacular arched and pendulous inflorescences, 1 to 5 m long. The fruits are globose or ovoid orange drupes that turn blackish-brown when ripe in autumn, which are arranged in pendulous infructescences. The roasted seeds are edible.
