If you’re looking for a tough, low-maintenance shrub that can handle unpredictable weather, Globe Caragana (Caragana arborescens) is a great choice. Globe Caragana is a compact, ornamental evergreen that can tolerate cold winters, dry summers, and a variety of soil types—making it an excellent addition to your yard. Here’s how to keep your Next Spruce happy and healthy. This guide is based on firsthand experience from the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, Alberta—a city located in hardiness zone 4B, where winters are cold, and the climate is relatively dry. You can also see Globe Caragana by visiting Nikka Yuko.

Globe Caragana isn’t a heavy feeder, so you won’t need to fuss over it too much.
Once established, your shrub will only need watering during extended dry periods. If it hasn’t rained in a while, give it a deep soak every 7–10 days during the growing season.
Globe Caragana has a naturally compact, globe shape, so it doesn’t require much pruning.
Lethbridge winters can be harsh, but the Globe Caragana is built to handle the cold (hardy to Zones 2–3).
Luckily, Globe Caragana is pretty pest-resistant, but here are a couple of things to watch for.
The Globe Caragana is an ideal shrub for Lethbridge’s dry, cold climate. By ensuring it gets full sun, well-draining soil, and proper watering, you can enjoy its attractive globe-shaped form, yellow flowers, and resilience for years to come. With its drought tolerance and minimal care needs, it’s an excellent low-maintenance option for your landscape.
