Royal Botanical Gardens

As the largest botanical garden of its kind in Canada, this National Historic Site is part of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. The Royal Botanical Garden is known as “Canada’s Biodiversity hotspot” featuring 2,700 acres of historical outdoor plant collections within four distinct gardens and 27 kms of nature trails. This open-air museum is filled with gardens, natural wonders and nature sanctuaries. It contains 25% of all wild plants in Canada and 40% of all wild plants found in Ontario.

The year-round attraction is comprised of the world’s largest lilac collection, 100,000 spring bulbs, 3,000 rose bushes, an iris garden, and an indoor Mediterranean Garden to name a few. The calendar of events includes floral society shows, bloom festivals coinciding with bloom times plus many other seasonal events. Each visit promises to be a new experience.

Shanghai Botanical Garden

Shanghai Botanical Garden, located in Xuhui District, Shanghai, is a comprehensive urban botanical garden focusing on plant introduction and domestication, botany research, scientific communication, and horticultural display.  There are 15 specialized parks, including a bonsai garden, an herbal medicine garden, an exhibition greenhouse, and an orchid room. It collects and screens a large number of horticultural varieties for urban greening, with more than 3,500 species of living plants and 6,000 varieties.

This remarkable new 207-hectare botanical garden was opened in 2010. Set amidst the fast-developing suburbs of Shanghai, it provides both a green resource for the city and a new center for plant science.  It is a popular public attraction with three spectacular glasshouses, a calendar of festivals, and 26 themed areas. We also have a large and growing education program for children and teenagers.

National Botanical Garden Godawari

The National Botanical Garden (NBG) was exquisitely designed by two British architects, Geoffrey Herklots and Tony Schilling. It is well-known as a center of plant conservation, education, research, display and recreation. It covers an area of 82 hectares with varying topography, 40 hectares of which have been transformed into various thematic gardens. It is surrounded by a natural evergreen forest with Schima-Castanospsis-Alnus as the dominant tree species. It is located at the base of Mt. Phulchowki (2765 m), the highest peak of the Kathmandu valley, and lies about 10 km southeast of Satdobato, Lalitpur District. A natural stream, Godawari, runs through the middle of the garden, adding to its beauty.

The Perdana Botanical Garden has always been a part of the green lung of the city and has a history of over a decade. Originally created as part of a recreational park but planted with collections of tropical plants, the garden have been rehabilitated and turned into a Botanical Garden. The garden also houses features that give the visitors the ambiance of being in a tropical rainforest, despite being in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

This garden, popularly known as “Nikko Botanical Garden”, is a branch of the Botanical Garden attached to the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo (commonly known as “Koishikawa Botanical Garden” ). The garden has a collection of species that grow in Japan’s alpine and temperate to subarctic regions, as well as foreign species closely related to them. Approximately 130 species of fern, 70 species of gymnosperms, and 2,000 species of angiosperms (approximately 1,750 dicotyledonous species and 250 monocotyledonous species) grow here, including those that grow naturally.

Koishikawa Botanical Garden is also one of Tokyo’s most pleasant and interesting places for cherry blossom viewing, because it does not get as crowded as other hanami spots and features cherry trees of various varieties. The botanical garden has about 7,000 kinds of plants, and there is also a “greenhouse” designated as an important national cultural property, and a “gassho-zukuri house” relocated from Gifu Prefecture’s Shirakawa-go, which has become a World Heritage site. 
In addition to popular animals such as koalas and giraffes, you can meet about 450 species of animals from large elephants to small killifish. This is the largest number of species in Japan, and you can see the unique ecology of a wide variety of animals.
