About This Event
Winter Tree Identification for Beginners Series – 02: Uncommon Conifers and Intro to Broadleaf Trees
10:00 to 13:00 – 3 hours
Description:Although most trees have dropped their distinct foliage, flowers, and fruits for winter dormancy, identification of tree species is still possible (and sometimes even easier than in growing conditions). Building off of our first trip in this series, we will continue our focus on conifers by discussing those with more specialized habitat requirements. We will also introduce identification features regarding broadleaf trees. Pine Grove is the largest forest in the Greenbelt and offers a mix of plantations and naturally formed forest ecosystems. We will begin at the trailhead in the P19 parking lot on Leitrim Road and explore a 3 km loop. Some equipment to consider bringing are binoculars (for looking at cones up high), camera, and hand lenses for smaller details, as well as hiking poles.
Difficulty: This will be a very light hike, but snowy conditions on well-trodden paths can create ice patches, so please wear appropriate footwear as well as warm clothing.
