Experience one of Japan’s most iconic folk traditions brought to life this winter at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. Join us inside the Bunka Centre for Sōran Bushi, a high-energy yosakoi-style dance set to a famous folk song from Hokkaidō.
Sōran Bushi began as a work song among herring fishermen, its lyrics echoing the calls and rhythm used to pull heavy nets from the sea. These powerful chants helped coordinate movement and lift spirits during long days on the water. Over time, the song evolved into a cultural staple and is now performed at festivals, schools, and community celebrations across Japan.
