Description: Canada is tackling several marine conservation challenges, including biodiversity loss, climate change impacts, pollution, and risks from industrial activities. Ambitious global targets to conserve 30% of water and seas through marine protected areas and other area conservation measures have been set.  To contribute to these goals, Parks Canada collaborates with partners to expand a network of national marine conservation areas (NMCAs) and reserves (NMCARs) that showcase the diversity of Canada’s oceans and Great Lakes. These protected areas aren’t just about saving marine life—they’re also designed to balance conservation with human activities like recreation, tourism, shipping, and both traditional and commercial fishing and in doing so, support coastal communities well-being. This presentation will explore Canada’s latest strides in marine conservation, with a deep dive on the marine protected areas managed by Parks Canada.
