Earthworms of the Field and Forest

Earthworms of the Field and Forest

About This Event

Many of us think of earthworms as critical to soil health, but nearly all the earthworms in Ontario today didn’t exist here 500 years ago. While beneficial in gardens and on farms, their soil-altering abilities can drastically change native habitats. Recently, ‘jumping worms’ (Megascolecidae family) have invaded temperate and tropical regions globally, posing a new threat to Ontario’s habitats and gardens.
Join us for our first meeting of 2026 via Zoom for Dr. Dobson’s presentation to learn how to identify these invasive earthworms, understand their impacts, and discover strategies to prevent their spread and mitigate damage to gardens and native habitats.
This meeting is open to all members of the Perth & District Horticultural Society. Guests can join us by sending a request to pdhsmembers@gmail.com. A guest fee of $5.00 will apply.
