Event Details

We will look at what an alvar is and talk about what makes it a special environment.
The speaker will present a wide variety of the native plants that grow in the Burnt Lands, an area a little north of Almonte, working through the seasons from May to September.  Some of these will be plants that are restricted to alvars, some are more widespread.

Presenter

KEN ALLISON

I have lived most of my life in Ontario and in eastern Ontario for the past 44 years..
I graduated from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Wildlife Biology a long time ago. I retired
in 2014 after working for 33 years in the federal Public Service.
I have been interested in the natural world since as far back as I can remember. I am interested
in almost everything so, as I often say, I am a lousy specialist. I am a fairly serious birder but am
also very interested in botany and entomology, especially butterflies and dragonflies. I blame my
sons for broadening my focus to include the last two groups. I enjoy having broader interests;
when the birds get quiet later in the morning, the insects become active and the plants are
always available at any time of day, so I’m never bored!

I am a member of both the Ottawa Field Naturalists and the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists
and am currently working as a volunteer on the third Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas, having worked
on the previous atlases in the early 1980’s and early 2000’s.
I lead walks and do presentations for many organizations and have helped with many bio-blitzes
and bird and insect counts across eastern Ontario. I really enjoy sharing the natural world with
others.

The Ottawa Valley Rock Garden & Horticultural Society (OVRGHS).

We are affiliated with both the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) and the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).

Our Society was formed in November 1992. Although the faces have changed somewhat since then, the objectives of the Society have remained the same: to promote and support “rock gardening” on a non-profit basis.

Over the years, we have built upon the solid foundation of the original group. We offer our members:

  • monthly meetings from September through May featuring local, national and international speakers,

  • periodic newsletters per year

  • an annual seed exchange,

  • spring plant sales each year,

  • garden tours and field trips,

  • workshops and demonstrations,

New members are always welcome.
