THIS TALK HAS BEEN CANCELLED & REPLACED BY “GARDENING FOR YOURSELF & THE EARTH”
Ben will discuss his trials and experiments with gravel gardens, which involve planting into mixes of aggregate like gravel, sand and even recycled concrete, mixed with small amounts of compost. These planting mixes support resilient, biodiverse and drought tolerant plant communities, ideally suited to urban public spaces. Ben will show how these innovative methods have been successfully applied in both private and public gardens in Prince Edward County.

Ben O’Brien is the owner of Wild by Design, a naturalistic garden design business in Prince Edward County that specializes in artfully crafted, richly planted, lovingly tended gardens. Since 2014 Ben’s passion for plants has informed every project, from small town gardens to large rural properties and urban public spaces. Ben’s trial garden research explores innovative ways to create beautiful, biodiverse and resilient designed plant communities.
We are affiliated with both the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) and the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA).
Our Society was formed in November 1992. Although the faces have changed somewhat since then, the objectives of the Society have remained the same: to promote and support “rock gardening” on a non-profit basis.
Over the years, we have built upon the solid foundation of the original group. We offer our members:
monthly meetings from September through May featuring local, national and international speakers,
periodic newsletters per year
an annual seed exchange,
spring plant sales each year,
garden tours and field trips,
workshops and demonstrations,
New members are always welcome.
