Memorial University Botanical Garden

A place to explore and play, MUN Botanical Garden has cultivated gardens and meandering trails nestled in our boreal forest. You’ll discover beautiful displays of traditional and native plants, perennial and vegetable gardens, and a few surprises. Stop to feed the ducks in our pond, then pause in the café for coffee or lunch. A gardener’s paradise and a place to inspire – come step into nature!

The MUN Botanical Garden serves as a multifaceted space where ecological diversity, education, and community involvement converge, making it a standout destination in Newfoundland.

  • 🌿 Diverse Ecosystems and Native Flora

Spanning 110 acres, the garden encompasses a variety of natural habitats, including fens, bogs, boreal forests, ponds, and barrens. These ecosystems provide a living classroom for researchers and students, offering hands-on learning experiences in plant ecology and conservation. The garden’s cultivated areas feature themed gardens, a public greenhouse, and an alpine house, showcasing both native and ornamental plant species.

  • 🦋 Butterfly Conservation Efforts

A unique feature of the garden is its commitment to butterfly conservation. Specially designed butterfly houses support overwintering species such as the green comma, mourning cloak, and Milbert’s tortoiseshell. These facilities provide shelter for butterflies that hibernate as adults during Newfoundland’s harsh winters, contributing to the preservation of local biodiversity.

  • 🎨 Community Engagement and Cultural Events

The MUN Botanical Garden actively engages the community through various programs and events. Educational offerings include workshops, summer camps, and guided tours aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Seasonal events like the “Merry & Bright” Holiday Light Festival transform the garden into a winter wonderland, attracting visitors of all ages.
