Van Berlo Gardens

Van Berlo Gardens is an impressive 2.4 acre garden overlooking the St. Lawrence River.  There is lots to see and appreciate in this plant collectors garden.  The front yard is completely planted with a selection of sun-loving plants, many of which are colorful. The backyard is a relaxing, shady retreat overlooking the water and the opposite shore. There is a large shrub border and an ‘arboretum’ of interesting tree species. In 2023, a large vegetable garden with a retaining wall and leveling features was added. Beginner, intermediate-level, and expert gardeners alike will all enjoy the various unusual plants scattered throughout the property. They will also appreciate the garden design layout ideas, complementary plant selection and placement, and the effective use of garden art.

This private garden is open to visitors by appointment (see website for contact information).

The owner, Mary Ann Van Berlo, is a highly admired, knowledgeable, avid horticulturist, and retired Master Gardener.  An often-invited speaker at many horticultural society meetings, Mary Ann has welcomed many visitors and bus tours to her garden since she opened it for viewing in 2015.  In June 2017, Mary Ann’s garden was featured in Ontario Gardener Magazine. A visit to her Van Berlo Gardens is a must.
