Gardening Volunteer Opportunity
Native Tree Team
This is a Volunteer role.
Number of Positions Available: 6 or more
Estimated Time: Perhaps a few hours a month, but seasonal
Job Location
Canadensis Botanical Garden, Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Description
Canadensis Botanical Garden Society, in close cooperation with the Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club, launched an initiative to grow rare native trees. We have identified a priority list of about 25 endangered native tree species in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. We collect seeds from healthy local trees, grow seedlings from them, plant them in a native tree nursery at Canadensis, and will distribute these trees in one or two years into our community.
Canadensis has created a native tree nursery and is currently expanding its size. We have enabling funding and support from the City of Ottawa. We are now looking to add more form and structure to our initiative through a dedicated volunteer team for this project. The tasks to be shared among team members may include:
- Seed collection and seed collection excursions
- Treating and planting seeds in pots, which can be placed inthe native tree nursery or other locations
- Maintenance of the tree nursery, including watering and other maintenance
- Community outreach to get the trees planted in the community gardening projects and potentially finding more partners
- Support tasks, including seed and tree registry
Additional Information
We think the real required skill is to be passionate about trees for any of many reasons.
