Join us for our October meeting with Dr. Jean Hollebone (OOS, AOS) who will speak on Zygopetalums. Zygopetalums are sometimes called the Cinderellas of the orchid world. They are beautiful and all dressed up with their attractive purple flowers and sweet perfume, all ready to go to the ball but for a long time, they have been neglected in our orchid collections. Now things are changing, and midnight is pending. Will they get to the ball, and will they meet the prince? Jean will give you the latest scoop on this small, exciting and interesting orchid genus and its closest relatives who are much nicer than those nasty stepsisters.
Jean needs no introduction for most of our members. She is a long-time member and volunteer with the Ottawa Orchid Society. She has held many positions including President. She retired from the Board in May 2025 as Program Director. She is also an AOS judge based in the Toronto Judging Centre. Active in the AOS since 2012, she has served in many positions: Trustee, Secretary, Vice-President, and Chair or member of many AOS Committees. Recently she received the Thomas Sheehan Award for Outstanding Service by an AOS volunteer, and we have awarded her with the Orchid Digest Diamond Award for her continuing volunteer work with us. Jean is an accomplished speaker and orchid expert. Her research on zygopetalums appears in Orchids, Supplement to the October 2024 issue on pages 52-80 a publication of the American Orchid Society.
The meeting will be a hybrid meeting. We will have the usual Show Table, raffle and refreshments with a break to chat with our “Ask Me Anything” experts. Members, please bring your plants to the show table by 1:40 pm to allow time for judging. If you are feeling unwell, please join us via Zoom.
