Event Details

12:30-1:30 September plant sale: Featuring members’ donated plants and vendor Philippe Martin who owns Hortus Alpinus, a new nursery located in Leclercville, Quebec.

We will sell members’ surplus dormant bulbs and rhizomes, shrub offsets that have taken root beside their mothers, extra plants from successful propagation projects and divisions from their perennials. Early fall is an excellent time for transplanting since root development proceeds quickly when the soil is still warm.

Seedex, our seed exchange, is one of the largest undertakings of the club. We have more than 1000 seed donations each year of familiar perennials and annuals as well as hard to find or rare plants. The seeds cost just $15 for 60 packages, but you must be a member to place an order. An annual membership taken out now will cover the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025, giving you access to the Seedex in both years. Join in person at the meeting or on-line: www.onrockgarden.com.

The sale will resume after the speaker’s presentation.

1:30 Presentation: Clematis: Myths and Truths

Clematis are largely misunderstood and gardeners waste much time learning the hard way. Deborah Hardwick will share her years of experience researching, propagating, and growing Clematis in her own garden in Ohio. Deborah’s goal is to demystify the cultivation of Clematis, and suggest possible cultivars that will thrive in our gardens.

Presenter

Deborah Hardwick

Deborah has gardened just north of Columbus, Ohio for 25 years, collecting, studying and growing Clematis. Her private collection of Clematis is one of the largest in the world, and features over 1000 varieties including species from around the globe. Native American Clematis species are an additional feature of the collection, with specimens representing the geographic distribution of a variety of Clematis groups grown from wild-collected seed.

Deborah’s lectures feature hundreds of photographs from her garden, illustrating the diversity and beauty of Clematis in the landscape.
