Doors Open series: Cities for pollinators: Exploring how characteristics of gardens and their neighborhoods affect insect communities
About This Event
Join the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library for the bi-annual edition of its virtual Doors Open series, where we feature a topic of interest to native plant gardeners, and then share brief updates about the events and activities underway at the seed library.
In this session, we’re excited to hear a presentation from Aalia Khan: “Cities for pollinators: Exploring how characteristics of gardens and their neighbourhoods affect insect communities.” Aalia is a PhD student at the University of Ottawa, part of Dr. Heather Kharouba’s Meadow Mosaic Lab. Aalia’s research explores how residential gardens can support insects and other urban wildlife. Through her work, she hopes to understand how cities can better support biodiversity, and how this in turn can improve quality of life for all urban inhabitants. You may have participated in her study this summer, looking for caterpillars, butterflies, bees and wasps in your yard. With data collected, we are looking forward to hearing Aalia’s initial impressions from this summer, and where her work will focus. Come with questions!
