Native Plant Gardening

Melanie Ouellette, Chair and Founder of the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library joins the Kanata-March Horticultural Society’s November meeting to discuss the importance of native plant gardening, and steps people can take to help. The Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library is committed to offering free native seeds to anyone who wants to grow with purpose, and to protect rare plant species and build resilient, pollinator-friendly spaces. Mélanie’s presentation will include a demonstration of how to create a winter sowing container.

This in-person meeting will be held at the John G. Mlacak Centre, Hall B, 2500 Campeau Drive. The meeting runs from 7:30 pm – 9 pm (doors open at 7:15 pm). Non-members are always welcome for a visitor’s fee of $5, or you can become a 2026 member for $20 (individual) or $30 (couple).

Mélanie Ouellette created the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library to foster Indigenous reconciliation, address climate change and empower women through the collecting, sharing and growing of native plants. Mélanie’s vision is to create a grassroots movement that is reused around the world so that humans responsibly fulfill their stewardship role in nature through education and sharing seeds for free. Mélanie is the 2023 recipient of the Ecology Ottawa Active & Accessible City Award, given to a member of your community that works to improve urban quality of life and inspires you and your community to advocate for an accessible, sustainable, livable, Ottawa.
