Popcorn night with a Garden Guru, plus an indoor-plant swap and a visit from the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library group!
In-person at St Mark’s Church, 1606 Fisher Ave, and online
(*For those tuning in online, please note that Linda Chalker-Scott’s talk will begin at 8:00 p.m., to give those on-site time to have coffee, do the plant swap and pick up wildflower seeds.)
Linda Chalker-Scott will give her presentation over Zoom, but we’d like to turn it into a bit of an event, for those who might like to view the talk on our big screen at St. Mark’s. We’ll have popcorn to munch while watching the screen, and an indoor-plant swap. Bring a plant, take a plant. Any leftover plants will be given away to attendees in a draw.
7:15-8:00 BEFORE THE TALK … Kristina Rudnitski from the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library will be on hand from 7:15 until the talk begins with information about gardening with native plants and the benefits they bring to the local environment. Late fall/early winter is the perfect time to sow native seeds, and the Seed Library will have a small selection of native plant seeds on hand that you can take home–for free–with simple instructions for winter sowing.
8:00 LINDA’S TALK … Honing Your B.S. (Bad Science) Detector: Informed gardeners want the latest plant and soil science information to use and pass on, but how to tell what’s science – and what’s pseudoscience? This talk will focus on honing your B.S. (Bad Science) detector and provide you with some guidelines for evaluating articles, books, and electronic resources objectively. We’ll then use those guidelines to evaluate information on several products and practices of interest to gardeners everywhere. Dr. Chalker-Scott has prepared a guidance list, copies of which are available for her presentation.
The presentation will also be live broadcast on the OHS YouTube Channel:

ABOUT LINDA … Dr. Chalker-Scott is a professor in the horticultural department at Washington State University and is their Extension Urban Horticulturist. She conducts research in applied plant and soil sciences. She is the award-winning author of five books, and is featured in a video series, ‘The Science of Gardening’. She also is one of the Garden Professors, a group of academic colleagues who educate and entertain through their blog and Facebook pages.
