Event Details

WHEN: Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 8:30 p.m. RAIN DATE: Sunday, July 25, 8:30 p.m.

Please note: Our registration policy has changed. Registration is for one individual only. Each attendee must be registered separately. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Reminder: Given the challenges of Covid-19, all attendees must wear a mask and maintain physical distances with other attendees, except members of the same household.

WHERE: Meet at Building 72 in the Arboretum at the Central Experimental Farm, east of the Prince of Wales roundabout.

WHAT: Bat populations in Ottawa and across Canada have significantly declined in recent years, a result of the deadly white-nose syndrome. In this lecture, you’ll learn about our flying, furry friends, Ottawa’s bat species, their superpowers, and their habitat. You’ll also explore their foraging and roosting habits, and learn practices that can help improve these habits.

The tour will go to the pond to seek out the bats’ aerial acrobatics, and we’ll eavesdrop using a special bat detector. We’ll also discuss how our backyards, landscapes, and forests can be managed to best suit bat habitat.

Bring a flashlight, good footwear, and bug repellant!

Please note rain date: Sunday, July 25, 8:30 p.m.

Attendance is limited to 20 to enable physical distancing and to avoid fines by complying with government regulations on group size.

Tour leader: Bettina Henkelmann and Ami Arsenault
