Canadensis Presents: A Virtual Visit to Patterson Garden Arboretum
Virtual Visit to Patterson Garden Arboretum with Alan Weninger, Arborist and Curator, University of Saskatchewan Department of Plant Science
We start Series Two with a visit to the Prairies – the Patterson Garden Arboretum in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The University of Saskatchewan’s Patterson Garden Arboretum was established in 1966 as part of the Prairie Regional Trials for Woody Ornamentals experiment. Today an informal experiment continues to test the hardiness of woody plant species, while working towards plant conservation and genetic diversity.
Dozens of new specimens are added each year, often sourced from wild seed of Canadian species or obtained from botanical gardens of the northern hemisphere. The arboretum has grown into one of the most compelling collections of trees, shrubs, and vines in the Canadian Prairie Provinces.
Guest Speaker: Alan Weninger, arborist and curator for Patterson Garden Arboretum at the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Plant Sciences. Alan thinks a lot about plants and botany, especially woody plants, and is working to expand the arboretum collection to include as many prairie-adaptable and Canadian species as possible. With his supervisor Jackie Bantle’s encouragement, they are an unstoppable force for making Patterson Arboretum an oasis of plant diversity in the heart of the prairies.
